With the increase of consumption in the automobile industry, the demand for graphite has increased sharply

Once a little-known commodity, demand for natural graphite is suffering as the electric car and renewable energy industries expand rapidly. Natural graphite is the largest component of lithium-ion batteries. Still, the broader demand is closely tied to the steel industry, where graphite is used to make heat-resistant bricks for blast furnaces, as linings for ladles and crucible, and as an agent to increase the carbon content of steel.

Graphite is one of two naturally occurring forms of pure carbon, the other being diamond, a three-dimensional crystal structure of carbon atoms, while graphite is a "two-dimensional" or scaly structure. However, both are robust, durable, heat and corrosion resistant. Both occur naturally and are produced on Earth through geothermal processes. They are usually solid, highly stable and can be manufactured artificially. In the short term, the main factors driving the growth of the graphite market are rapidly increasing demand in the lithium-ion battery industry and increasing steel production in Asia and the Middle East. The World Bank forecasts that low-carbon energy technologies, mainly lithium-ion batteries, will require 4.5 million tons of graphite per year by 2050, 500 percent more than 2018 levels and 318 percent more than total graphite production in 2019. In addition to the demand for energy storage applications, the battery industry is expected to be the industry with the largest demand in the graphite supply chain.
