Aerogel powder: preparation method
In most cases, the preparation of aerogels involves a sol gel process and a supercritical drying procedure. By controlling the conditions for the polycondensation and hydrolysis reactions, sol-gel produces nanoclusters of different structure in the solution. These clusters then adhere to one another to form a solid gel. Unlike the liquid reagents, the solid skeleton is filled with the liquids remaining after the chemical reaction. Supercritical drying is used on gel to avoid damage to its material structure due to surface tension. In order to convert the liquid in gel into a supercritical liquid, the gel must be placed in a pressure vessel. The interface between the liquid and gas disappears. Also, surface tension is no longer present. The pressure vessel then releases the supercritical fluid, producing a low-density, porous and disordered material.
