Tesla has secured graphite anode material for battery production in a rare New Deal

Tesla has secured a new "active anode material" from graphite for battery production in a rare new procurement agreement with Syrah Resources Limited.

Syrah Resources Limited of Australia operates a graphite mine in Balama, Mozambique. The mine will feed an upcoming natural Graphite active anode Material (AAM) production facility in Vidalia, Louisiana. Sierra is currently in the process of increasing the facility\'s annual capacity to 100,000 tons. Today, the company announced that Tesla has secured the bulk of the production through a new offtake agreement:

Subject to the final eligibility, Tesla will undertake the initial expansion of the majority of Vidalia\'s proposed AAM capacity at a fixed price for a period of four years beginning with commercial production rates. Tesla also has the option to obtain additional production from Vidalia to meet Sierra\'s conditions to expand its capacity to more than 100,000 tons per year. Tesla rarely has offtake agreements with junior mining companies, but in this case, the project appears to have made considerable progress. As we previously reported, Tesla recently asked the U.S. government to waive tariffs on graphite imports from China -- claiming it can\'t get the mineral anywhere else.

The company is currently ramp-up production at its large-scale (10 GWh) pilot plant in Fremont and hopes to deploy 4,680 battery capacities and even more (100 GWh) at its Berlin Gigafactory and Texas Gigafactory next year. But the automaker also said it plans to use a variety of chemicals and battery supplies to meet its fast-growing battery demand as it ramps up the production of battery-electric vehicles.
