Amazon plans to launch the first two prototype satellites for its massive Kuiper Broadband constellation in 2022.

If all goes according to plan, the two spacecraft, named Kuipersat-1 and Kuipersat-2, will be launched from the Space Force Station at Cape Canaveral, Florida, in the fourth quarter of next year, the company announced today (Nov. 1).

The duo will test key technologies for Project Kuiper, a constellation in low Earth orbit (LEO) that Amazon expects to eventually consist of more than 3,200 satellites.

"Many new technologies have been invented to meet Kuiper cost and performance goals. All systems have tested well in simulation and lab environments, and we will soon be ready to see how they perform in space, "Rajiv Badiyar, Kuiper program vice president of technology, said in a statement.

Kuipersat-1 and Kuipersat-2 will reach orbit via the RS1, a new rocket developed by California-based ABL Space Systems. Amazon also announced today that it has signed a multi-launch agreement with ABL to provide early launches of the Kuiper project.

According to its ABL specification page, the 88-foot-tall (27-meter) RS1 is capable of launching 2,975 pounds (1,350 kg) of payloads into low orbit. ABL costs $12 million to launch each two-stage rocket. The RS1 has yet to fly, but ABL says it plans its first launch from the Pacific Space Launch Facility in Alaska by the end of 2021.

Earlier this year, Amazon announced that it had signed a deal with United Launch Alliance, whose Atlas 5 rocket will Launch operational Project Kuiper spacecraft on nine separate launches.

Project Kuiper is not the only proposed broadband constellation. SpaceX, for example, has launched more than 1,700 spacecraft for its Starlink network, which could eventually include tens of thousands of satellites.
