What is 316 Stainless Steel?

Many alloys are added on steel to enhance its desired properties. A stainless steel that is of marine grade, commonly referred to as Type 316, is resistant to certain types of aggressive environments.

There are many varieties for stainless steel that are 316. Common types include L F, N, and H variants. They are all slightly different and each one is designed for various purposes. L means 316L steel has the lowest carbon content, which is below 316.

The 316 and the 316L Stainless Steel Common Quality

While they are similar to Type 304 commonly found in the food industry, the Type 316 and 316L both have superior resistance to corrosion and are more durable at high temperatures. They can’t be strengthened through heat treatment, and they can be easily stretched and shaped.

The difference between 316 and Stainless Steel

316L stainless-steel has less carbon content than the 316. But even with its low carbon levels, 316L is very similar to 316 in virtually every way. The cost is similar as are both durable and corrosion-resistant, making them an excellent choice in demanding situations.

However, for projects that require lots of welding is the preferred choice because 316 more prone to welding corrosion over those using 316L (corrosion at the seam). However, the 316 can be annealed to protect against the attenuation of welding. It is also a suitable stainless for high temperature, high corrosion applications which is why it is so popular in marine and construction.

There is no 316 or 316L is the most cost-effective option. The 304 is similar to the 304L, but the price is lower. It isn’t as durable as the 317 and 317L which are stronger, have higher molybdenum contents and better all-around corrosion protection.
