The Al in MAX phase in the Ti-Al-C System can rapidly diffuse, and selectively oxidize in order to form a thick Al2O3 in the oxidation. It prevents the matrix from further oxidation. The system material is able to self-heal at high temperatures due to the microstructure between Ti3AlC2 & Ti2AlC & the Al2O3 that is generated. In a high-temperature setting, this oxide fills in the cracks or scratches on the surface, restoring the material's original properties. This is a very important characteristic for materials to maintain their mechanical properties, and improve the stability and durability of the materials.
